The Region 5 Animal Response Team is exceptionally well prepared for any emergency in which animal evacuation may be required. Our large volunteer base is organized under the guidance of The Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and state and local emergency management professionals utilizing the principles and practices of the Incident Command System (ICS).
All of our active team members have completed CERT Training as well as the required series of online FEMA Emergency Management Institute courses. We hold regular monthly volunteer meetings at two different locations within the region. Topics include but are not limited to animal behavior and handling, personal protective equipment and zoonotic diseases. Presentations are through the leadership of knowledgeable practitioners.
We also hold quarterly training exercises where participants are taught to facilitate a safe and efficient response to animal emergencies. We share common goals of animal issues and public awareness during disasters and regularly set up actual temporary shelters with live animals so standardized procedures and communications are in place.
CT SART Region 5 proudly houses two 8 x 16 ‘well stocked small animal husbandry equipment trailers ready to deploy. We have recently expanded our capabilities to provide for large animals in a shelter situation and have obtained a two horse trailer and associated equine and large animal medical supplies and emergency equipment
